About Acupuncture
Our naturopathic doctors are trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine as part of their accredited schooling in Naturopathic Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine has been used to manage disease and optimize health for over 2000 years. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a unique medical system that is based on the premise that opposing energies (referred to as yin and yang) act on the vital force of the body (referred to as qi), and that illness occurs when there is an imbalance in this vital force. The goal of Traditional Chinese Medicine is to promote the natural flow of qi, allowing the body to function properly. Traditional Chinese Medicine treats the patient’s entire disposition, instead of just particular symptoms.
Traditional Chinese Medicine methods of treatment can include moxibustion, cupping, nutrition, herbal remedies and acupuncture. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the skin. These needles are inserted at very particular points of the body, that follow meridians that are associated with the organ systems of traditional Chinese Medicine. The location of the needles is highly variable, and depends on your symptoms and Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis. Needles are left in place for approximately 30 minutes. The need for moxibustion, cupping, and herbal remedies will be determined by your naturopathic doctor.
Some common health conditions that are frequently improved with acupuncture include infertility, insomnia, stress, depression, anxiety, diabetes, heart disease, sinusitis, allergies, asthma, arthritis, back pain, cough, respiratory infections, constipation, IBS, metabolic diseases and more.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective addition to the vast majority of medical treatments, as it is very low-risk when performed by a qualified professional, and does not interact with any medications or supplements.
